TigerCon 2012 A big success!

posted Dec 9, 2012, 2:36 PM by CentralMissouri ScaleModelers   [ updated Dec 9, 2012, 2:37 PM ]

The Second Annual TigerCon 2012 Model Contest and Vendor Fair held December 1st, 2012 was a big success!

I want to say a huge thank you to all of the CMSM club members and family that worked to make the event the success that it was.  Because of the welcome table smiles, and the registration desk professionalism, and the vendor helpers humping boxes, and the raffle operators managing the tickets, and the announcer keeping us informed, and the make-n-take coordinators working with the kids, and the model judges - the contestants and vendors have told us how great our show is and that they are looking forward to next year!

Contest Information

Visitors and their Approximate Ages

  • 24 - Kids (less than 20)
  • 16 - 20s
  • 6 - 30s
  • 22 - 40s
  • 25 - 50s
  • 17 - 60s and older
A total of 110 visitors were recorded.  However, because the Columbia's Farmer's market was going on at the same time it was hard to know who was here for the models and who was here for the rutabagas.  We were able to grab and redirect a few shoppers to stop by and see the models.

Contestants

We had 42 contestants mostly from Missouri with a few from Arkansas, Illinois and Kansas. These 42 contestants entered 165 models total!  We had 15 first time TigerCon contestants with 27 returning modelers.

Make-N-Take

This was the first year we did a Make-N- Take for the kids ages 8-13.  We were pleased that we had 12 youth (our future contestants) pick up a model and built it.  Parents were very thankful that we had something to engage the kids.

Thank You

I also want to make a special "Thank You" to Colin Smialek (for being the Show Coordinator), Scott Adams and Jack Andrewson for the many long hours and extra effort they put into organizing and coordinating this event.  Without you it would not be the success that it is!

Columbia Public Library Space Model Display

posted Jun 5, 2012, 5:47 PM by CentralMissouri ScaleModelers

The Columbia Public Library has graciously allowed the Central Missouri Scale Modelers to display a collection of Real Space and Sci-Fi Space vehicles in their third floor display.  This will be displayed for the summer along with a flyer pointing people to our club and web site.  This is a fantastic opportunity to promote our club and to raise awareness of scale modeling as a hobby.

Thank you Daniel Boone Regional Library - Columbia!!

Scale Modeling Workshop a success!

posted Jun 5, 2012, 5:41 PM by CentralMissouri ScaleModelers

June 2nd, 2012 the Central Missouri Scale Modelers in partnership with the Columbia Public Library hosted a Scale Modeling Workshop open to the public.  The CMSM setup three demonstration tables (figure painting, general model construction and decal application), two Make-N-Take tables for the kids and parents to make one of two models to take home.  We also started the Workshop off with a short presentation of the club and the hobby of scale modeling.  Members that helped also brought models to set on a static display to show what can be done.

We had 8 kids and accompanying parents choose either an SR-71 Black Bird plane or a Hummer vehicle model to build and take home!  We held a drawing for the kids and for the adults giving away two models.

The Columbia Public Library was very happy to have the event and asked if we can consider doing one in the winter!

I want to say a special "Thank You!" for Rusty (wife and kids), Colin, Jack, Randy, T.Mike and Eric for helping out with this event!

Scale Modeling Workshop June 2, 2012

On a side note - I learned a valuable lesson at this event.  My son and I packed up my models I brought for display very carefully in a large plastic tub.  Just before we left we decided to set the tub on some chairs while we picked up the room.  Did you know that the sound of crashing models on the floor gives one a sickly feeling in the pit of your stomach.  Yes - the valuable lesson learned that day is never set your tub of models on a chair or table - always use the ground where they can not fall.  Yes every one of my models suffered damage from minor to catastrophic.  The diorama display dust covers suffered scratches or fractures so if you know how to buff out cheap display plastic let me know!
I have been able to repair most of the models and I am now able to walk by my model displays without crying....
Lesson 43 - learned..... the hard way!

The Central Missouri Scale Modelers were honored to be allowed to display aircraft models that were flown or protected by the Tuskegee Airmen.  Our member Colin Smialek and his wife attended the reception and met these honored guests.

Colin was especially glad to be able to talk with the distinguished Col Charles McGee and to present the models that Col McGee asked us last year to display.

CMSM wants to say a special thanks to UMB Bank for allowing us the opportunity and honor of presenting our work and our club to those in attendance.

DerbyDays April 2012

The Central Missouri Scale Modelers was asked to setup a display at the April 14th 2012 Boy Scout Derby Days event located at the Parkade Center in Columbia Missouri.  The event was an opportunity for us to educate the kids and parents that scale modeling is a great hobby and a perfect next step for the kids to keep involved in a hands on construction based activity.

We had two tables loaded with models and awards our members have won as a way to catch the public's attention.  We had interest from the kids as they thought it was really cool and we had interest from the parents as they remember the times when they built models.  There were adults that stopped by and told us that they were really happy to know that we exist and that they will try to attend a meeting soon.

Gary Lazear and his kit display

Gary Lazear made a very nice display of how a model kit looks out of the box and what it looks like assembled.

I huge thank you for T.Mike C., Jack A., Gary L., Scott A. and Brian L. for setting up, manning, marketing and tearing down the display.
