IPMS Gateway to the West Contest

For those of you who missed the IPMS Gateway to the West Contest and Swap Meet in St. Louis last weekend, you missed a great show.  The vendor room was packed and there were some fantastic bargains to be had.  We all spent more than we had initially planned.  The contest had 284 entries.  That was up about 40% from the previous year.  I certainly hope this carries over to our show in November.  Also, at this contest, the number of car entries outnumbered the aircraft.  Someone had a completed 1/200 USS Arizona!

Our club made a decent showing.  I was shut out, but Jeff Pinson and Rusty Ratliff each took home a trophy.  We have a new star in the club and that is Rusty’s daughter.  She took home trophies for best junior aircraft AND best junior model.  Congratulations!

There are a number of exciting (expensive) new models on the market.  At our meeting last week, many of you read the review on the 1/200 scale battleship Bismark ($400).  We saw that at Mark Twain Hobbies.  At CRM, Jeff and I looked over a brand new 1/200 scale USS Hornet ($400).  It comes with B-25’s for a Doolittle attack scene, or regular navy planes (Wildcats, Devastators, and Dauntless).  We also saw a new 1/32 scale B-17 (somewhere north of $200).  This was the version with the chin turret, but there is another version coming out without a nose turret.  The manager at Mark Twain also told me that there is a 1/200 scale model of the USS Missouri coming soon.

It was a very good trip.
